In 1978, a TV movie called The New Maverick had 50-year-old James Garner and Jack Kelly reprising their roles, with Charles Frank playing young Ben Maverick, the son of their cousin Beau. A professional reunion of sorts was planned on the series being produced by Johnson, NCIS (2003), for Jim to come out of retirement in 2008, but it was ultimately decided that Garner's health was still a bit unstable, and friend Ralph Waite was cast instead.
